Glitter is more controversial than you might think. While some find themselves glitter obsessed, others call the ostentatious crafting essential the herpes of arts and crafts. Well, those who love it should use it while they can because scientists are against it to the point of wanting to ban it.

Yes, you read that correctly, scientists hate glitter, and for good reason. Researcher Trisia Farrelly Massey University in New Zealand told CBS that glitter should be banned. Gitter is a microplastic that when washed down the drain ends up in oceans and lakes. These microplastics play a big role in the pollution of our oceans. In a study by Plymouth University in the United Kingdom, researchers found a large number of fish with these plastics in them.

Many preschools in the UK are already banning glitter because of the environmental issues it causes.

One of the biggest problems is shimmery bath products because they always end up down the drain. However, don’t go ditching your Lush Bath Bombs and products that shine. On their website, they have this statement on their glittery products.

“Your love of glitter can also be fulfilled without plastic. A new kind of sparkle, made from synthetic fluorphlogopite (also referred to as synthetic mica), is adding the dazzle to bath bombs, shower gels and all kinds of cosmetics.”

So if you are looking into glittery products, know that there are options that are biodegradable and will not hurt the environment.
