Have you ever wondered what goes on under the suit of the mascot? We talked to Central’s very own Falcon and asked what it’s like being the mascot.

To become the school mascot, our Falcon visited Coach Rinker, Central’s Athletic Director and expressed his interest. Because there was no one acting as the mascot when our bird went to apply for the position, he got it right away.

The role of the mascot is to represent the school and get the crowd going.

“You gotta act crazy, but not too crazy because then you just look like an idiot,” said the Falcon. “You have to put on a show and relate with people. It’s always funny when little kids have no idea if you really are a bird or not. They ask why you have human hands, but everyone tells them that it’s a real bird and they are so confused.”

There are four parts to the costume: the head, the suit, two feet and the tights. However, our falcon prefers not to wear the tights.

Getting people excited and goofing around gets a bird tired and hot. So when you do not see the mascot at a game, he is probably taking a birdy break. During birdy breaks, the Falcon sits out of the way of the public eye and removes the costume head. Sometimes he gets a snack, so if he does that he takes the whole suit off to keep it clean. When he is recharged, he goes back out and is the energetic, funny bird we all know.

As for conditions inside the suit, especially towards the end of a game, the Falcon describes it as “what a swamp smells like.” It’s hot and “like a jungle.” It can also be itchy if one does not wear a long sleeve t-shirt underneath.

“The mascot has a lot of fun,” the Falcon said. “Go Falcons!”
