The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Many schools try different ways to prevent bullying. Central High School is using social media as a way to prevent bullying by using the STOP!T app. This is a way students can report bullying anonymously. Hopefully, this app will allow more people to feel safer when reporting bullying.

Here are some facts on bullying:

  • Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.

  • Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying.

  • 17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester.

  • 1 in 10 students drops out of school because of bullying.

  • Kids who are bullied can feel like they are different, powerless, unpopular and alone.

  • Students who are “different” (disabled) are bullied more than their nondisabled peers.

  • Most of the time getting bullied can directly impact your education.

  • Over 67% of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying.

  • Suicide is the leading cause of death among 10-14-year-olds. Approximately 30% of these cases are related to bullying.

  •  Girls bully in groups more than guys do.

As someone once said, “Be sure to taste your words before you spit them out.” Let’s celebrate National Bullying Prevention Month by uniting our students and educating them on bullying.
