I’m going to outline a brief scenario. If it sounds like you, keep reading. If it doesn’t, keep reading anyway; the point I’m trying to make applies in more ways than one. Maybe you’ll get something out of it. The scenario is this:

You have loved _______ for as long as you can remember. You’re part of the ________ Club. You’ve participated in ________ every chance you got. When you really think about it, it’s all you want to do with your life, because nothing else will do. Nothing else will make you happy. Going to college seems pointless if you’re not going to study _______. But your parents don’t see it the same way. Or maybe they don’t care what you do, maybe they even encourage you, but part of you feels differently. It tells you that you’re not good enough. Or maybe you know you’re good enough, but it doesn’t matter; there are no jobs for ______ majors. You might as well study something safe, and then just do _______ on the side. If it takes off, it takes off. If it doesn’t, well then you’ve got your degree and your day job. That will be enough. It’ll have to be.

Sound familiar? Then here’s what I’ll say. Whatever fills in those blanks for you, it’s valid. And it’s powerful. And it’s persistent. And if you ignore it, and play it safe, it will keep biting at you. It will never stop until you do what you’re meant to do with your life, or die trying. And here’s the kicker — you only have one chance to do it.

Keeping that in mind, ask yourself: What’s the end goal? What’s the point of studying something you aren’t wholeheartedly passionate about? What’s the point of going into a career if you don’t care about it?

You’ve got one shot to make your life meaningful. That’s an absolute fact, and if I had to condense all of the above into a single inspirational quote, it would be this: Do the thing that gives you butterflies in your stomach. Seriously.
